Mwika [2021]

At the base of Mt Kilimanjaro is the Mwika Co-op. On the right day the view of the mountain is stunning, however most of the time it is hidden by clouds, which are perfect conditions for great coffee. Our importing friends, Celina and Tony from First Crop Coffee, first visited in 2015 and things have changed so much since then. In 2015 the co-op farmers were all processing coffee individually then delivering dried parchment to be combined into lots for sale. This coffee was good, but had so much potential for improvement. In 2019 the Tanzanian government changed laws around coffee production which limited the ability for small farmers to contribute to the co-op. They needed to repair the pulper at the wet mill and build some drying infrastructure. First Crop Coffee began the Mwika Project which raised and contributed $13,000 to the co-op allowing them to complete the infrastructure works and produce local farmers coffee again. This is still a very young producer in the scheme of specialty coffee and we are excited to see the future of this community.
